After open heart surgery, it is common for patients to experience fatigue and decreased energy levels. It is important to listen to your body and not over-exert yourself. However, some level of activity is necessary in order to maintain your strength and independence.

Your occupational therapist will work with you to create a personalized exercise routine that takes into account your current level of fitness and any limitations imposed by your surgeon. The goal of these exercises is to gradually increase your heart rate and improve your overall cardiovascular conditioning.

You may be started on a walking program or other low-impact activities such as biking or swimming. As you get stronger, you will be able to add in more strenuous activities such as jogging or weights.

At CrossRoads Physical Therapy, we want to tell you that it is important to follow your therapist's instructions and not push yourself too hard. Remember that you are still recovering from surgery and need to take things slowly at first. With time and patience, you will be back to your old self in no time!
